Primary Compliance Requirements
  • University employees, students and volunteers who may operate a vehicle on behalf of WWU must complete the state Basic Driver Safety Program. See Training section below.
  • Employees and students must obtain prior approval for University business travel that will incur travel related expenses.
  • Rental of 15-passenger vans is prohibited by the University. Only 12-passenger vans are permitted if driver criteria is met and the Large Passenger Van Training has been completed.
  • Contact Risk Management before:
    • Acquiring or using watercrafts (i.e. boats)
    • Using privately owned, charted, or rented aircraft (including blimps and balloons) for University business or sponsored events.

This information is essential for protecting children involved in University programs and events. Western is committed to the prevention of child/elder abuse, harassment, and bullying.

Risks of Non-Compliance

  • Failure to report suspected child abuse can perpetuate a serious criminal situation involving a child
  • Failure to adhere to program standards can put a child’s health/safety at risk
  • University liability and risk of law suits (including possible individual civil suits)
  • Institutional reputational harm

Primary Compliance Requirements

  • When a University employee (including student employees) observes, learns about, or has reasonable cause to believe a child or vulnerable adult has been abused during a University sponsored program, that employee must report in accordance with written procedures.
  • Any University department head that has a program, event, or activity involving children or vulnerable adults must ensure it is registered with the University and conduct a risk assessment to be reviewed by the Risk Manager.
  • Employees and students must comply with University policy regarding bringing their child to the classroom or workspace.

Risks of Non-Compliance

The resources provided below are for the purpose to reduce the risks associated with drugs and alcohol use among students, faculty, and staff. Non-compliance can result in significant harm to individuals including, but not limited to, injury and death, suspension or termination from school or employment, jail or prison time, loss of wages, ineligibility for military or job opportunities, and loss of personal assets.

Primary Compliance Requirements

  • Adhere to state and federal laws regarding consumption, possession, and distribution of drugs and alcohol.
  • No use, possession, manufacturing, or distribution of marijuana on University property or University sponsored activities.
  • Follow written policy, standards, procedures, and codes of conduct to ensure appropriate and authorized use and handling of alcohol or drugs.
